Originally named the Royal Viking Sun when it debuted in , and later the Seabourn Sun, the vessel has always been one where passenger comforts rank high with officers and crew.
That philosophy has continued with Holland America. The ship's guest relations desk, for example, is visited daily by passengers who just want to say "hi" to staff rather than to voice a complaint.
Ultimately, one of the most delightful aspects of Prinsendam is that it is utterly unique within the HAL fleet -- despite the many features, facilities and amenities consistent with newer, bigger vessels.
It's still by and large a ship for more mature travelers who want classic style cruising and contemporary conveniences.
On the second day we really enjoyed walking through the town on our own, along the waterfront, a canal lined with boats, through the pedestrian shopping street, to the Tivoli amusement park entrance fee prohibitive , and back to the ship via a series of gardens.
We had a lovely day walking around Tallinn on our ownvery picturesque. We got a bit lost and ended up climbing old graffiti-covered stone steps to the top of a wooded hill, suprised to find a skateboard park among the ruins!
A street along the old wall turned out to be the best place to buy a wool sweater of all the Baltic ports we visited.
One of our fellow passengers lost euros and her charge card to a pickpocket at a look-out point it happened while she was distracted and raising her arms to take a photo , so beware!
Loved this city! We elected to walk around it on our own 5 hours. The city map provided at the pier was sufficient. We sat on top of the cathedral steps listening to some folk singers in Senate Square.
Church of the Rock was marvelous--there was a pianist playing when we arrived and we had a picnic on top of the rock.
At the market, I sampled a local delicacy--a small fish, battered and eaten whole. A walk around a lake on the way back to the ship proved very scenic and serene.
We left the tour group in order to spend our time climbing on the stone wall. This was wonderfulwe walked the entire perimeter of this narrow stone wall encircling the medieval town of Obidosmuch more interesting than the souvenir shops!
It was difficult to hear the river guide because of several non-English speaking passengers not from our ship who spoke loudly to each other throughout the tour.
I was also dismayed at the lost time when the boat was parked for minutes under Big Ben across from the London Eye while letting off and picking up other passengers, following which it crossed the Thames and let us off at the London Eye.
It would have been more interesting to have been given the option of getting off the boat at that point and cross the bridge on foot to reach the London Eye.
The London Eye provided good views and was a nice option given our limited time in London but it would have been nice to have a guide explaining what we were seeing.
Our guide for the city tour was knowledgeable but was somewhat cynical and made it difficult to understand what we were seeing.
For example, he would tell us to get our cameras ready but then would not tell us until we were past that point what it was we were seeing.
The most valuable part of this trip was what we learned from the personal experiences before and after the Berlin wall came down related to us by the woman who had essentially the role of a stewardess on the long bus ride between the port of Warnemunde and Berlin.
They fed us excessively on this 13 hour excursion. The ship had opened the restaurant early enough to have breakfast on board, there was a stop for a hearty German meal in the early afternoon, and the ship was still serving supper when we returned.

If you can find a downtown rental location, do that instead. We had a very rainy day the Seine and many other rivers were flooding , but had an hour or so in each stop to enjoy without rain.
This is actually Zeebrugge but with relatively usable public transport to Bruges combining a ship transfer and train. We chose to go to Damme instead since we've been to Bruges lovely though it is.
Damme is the "off the beaten track" spot, so very quiet, even with a few tour buses. Others took the tram all day ticket and explored the coastline.
Hamburg was a mixed bag for us. Germany has a great cycling system, so we had hoped to explore by bike. However, it seems to have missed Hamburg.
Since we had an overnight there, we chose to leave the bike on the ship the second day and took the "free walking tour". We had a great guide 3rd generation in Hamburg , so that was a great option.
The highlight for many was the Miniature Museum near the port - it sounded amazing, but we just didn't have the energy after the walking tour.
This port was actually a bit of a surprise. We cycled into Lubeck and back from the port, so had the chance to get out in the countryside - really nice day.
Lubeck itself was quite busy with tourists, but fun to see - found a simple amber necklace for my grand-daughter in the old market square.
Several people actually enjoyed the seaside town of Travemunde every bit as much as Lubeck. Fortunately the cruise line supplied a free shuttle to both towns.
These aren't advertised much in advance, but were a good option in a number of ports. Tallinn is a great port we've been there before , but with several ships in port, it really was quite overrun by tourists.
You really need to get into the back streets as much as possible. It was a rainy day again, so that impacted the enjoyment of the town.
Two days in St. Petersburg was wonderful. We booked a private excursion company TJ Travel and had a small group tour with just 10 of us.
We took the "Highlights" tour, which was really full, but definitely at a quick pace. We went to twice as many sites as we did last time on the ship tours.
As is generally the case, the cruise line led you to believe that you must take a ship's excursion if you don't have a visa, but would eventually acknowledge that you can take an tour by an official Russian tour company.
There were two tour companies that were used by our Roll Call group - TJ and Alla. I think they saw pretty much the same sites, though the Alla group was slightly larger 16 people.
Both experiences were good. Our tour did the out-of-town sites all on the first day, then the Hermitage and St. Petersburg sites on the second day so we were closer to the port and didn't have concerns about getting back on time.
